In February the Computer Science department were delighted to welcome staff from the University of Liverpool to deliver a session on Robotics. Groups of year 8 pupils were given the opportunity to program 'Lego Mindstorms' robots, and learnt how to control them using different motors and sensors. Everybody involved made a great effort, and the University staff were impressed that some teams managed to get their robots to sense when they were approaching a barrier and to turn around. We discussed links with real world Computer Science, such as the use of artificial intelligence in self-driving cars. Pupils were also encouraged to think about the wide range of careers that use the skills and knowledge gained by studying Computer Science and ICT.
