On Monday 1st December, 15 Vi formers attended the PolEcon conference in Central Hall, Westminster.
They listened to speeches and presentations by several prominent politicians including the Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow, the Leader of UKIP Nigel Farage, Shadow Education Secretary Tristam Hunt, Former Foreign Secretary William Hague, Minister for Overseas Development Alan Duncan, Minister for Justice Simon Hughes, Conservative M.P Nadine Dorries and Labour M.P Rachel Reeves.
After each speech, students were given the opportunity to question the politicians. Several students volunteered to ask questions and two of our students were selected to ask their question in front of an audience of 400 other students. This took an enormous amount of courage and confidence and was an excellent opportunity to speak directly to the people who control how the country works. Their questions were intelligent and thought-provoking and were taken seriously by the politicians addressed.
In addition, we had the opportunity to meet our local M.P Bill Esterson who was keen to listen to our students’ thoughts on the speakers and on politics in general. We look forward to welcoming Mr Esterton to Maghull High School in the near future after he agreed to come into school for a more in-depth discussion.

We recently welcomed 13 students and four teachers from Ningbo Beilun Minggang High School in China to our school for a week. Whilst with us they spent every morning shadowing sixth formers and had the opportunity to sample lessons in every subject we offer. Every afternoon the students, accompanied by some of our sixth formers, were able to visit some of the top tourist destinations that Liverpool has to offer, such as Aintree Race Course, Albert Dock, the ferry across the Mersey but the highlight of the week was an evening of bowling, something the Chinese students have never done before. The teachers also were able to observe lessons and spend time discussing curriculum content with staff and senior management. Our Chinese visitors also gave a performance, to our top 100 vivo students from year 7, which included demonstrations of Chinese opera, dance and calligraphy as well as musical performances.
We aim to start a long term relationship with Ningbo Beilun Mingang High School over the coming years- to share the best of our education with the best of their, exchange ideas and learn about our different cultures, so look out for information on the development of this relationship over the coming months and years

The Charlie Higson Author Event in the Atkinson at Southport on Monday 15th September 2014 was an amazing event for Year 7 Pupils from Maghull High.
The pupils had been offered the chance to qualify for the Author Event earlier in the month by “Reading and Quizzing” on books from the school library under the school’s literacy package “Accelerated Reader Scheme”.
90 pupils qualified and we took them via coach from school on the morning to the Atkinson, Lord Street, Southport.
The event included other High Schools from the area such as Range High, Holy Family, etc.
The students had a meet and greet session with Charlie Higson and he talked about his writing for TV, Radio and Books and what inspired him to write for pleasure.
The pupils had the opportunity to purchase books from Broadhurst Book Shop, of his Zombie Series “The Enemy” and he signed and greeted each pupil individually!
Pupils took pictures and enjoyed asking questions of the author. A great day was had by all and the pupils who attended were impeccably polite and well behaved and a credit to Maghull High.
