Attendance

The government’s expectation for good attendance is 96% or above. A report published by the Department for Education in 2016 stated that “pupils with no absence are 2.2 times more likely to achieve 5+ GCSEs A*-C or equivalent and 2.8 times more likely to achieve 5+ GCSEs A*-C or equivalent including English and mathematics than pupils missing 15-20% of KS4 lessons”.

Parents are reminded that time off in term time does have a detrimental impact on outcomes for students and should be avoided wherever possible. Requests for exceptional term time holiday should be submitted directly to Mr Anderson.

Geography Quality Award For MHS

Maghull High School are delighted to announce that they have been awarded the prestigious Secondary Geography Quality Mark which recognises quality and progress in geography leadership, curriculum development and learning and teaching in schools. All the award winners undergo a rigorous moderation process, and the team of assessors were hugely impressed by the manner in which all at the school are continuing to embrace new and innovative approaches to teaching geography. The SGQM recognises student attainment, progress and achievement in geographical knowledge, understanding, values and skills, and sets expectations about the quality of teaching in geography. It promotes effective subject leadership and management, helping subject leaders raise the standards of geography in their schools.  Graham Donnan, Head of Geography said, “We are absolutely delighted with receiving this coveted award, which comes on the back of excellent Geography GCSE and A Level results this summer; and to be one of only 27 schools nationally to do so this year makes it even more special.  It is an acknowledgement of the high quality of teaching and learning that is taking place, and all the hard work and effort put in by staff and students alike to create a successful and vibrant Geography Department.”

Presentation Evening Celebration

We recently held our annual awards presentation evening, where the achievements of over one hundred students were celebrated.  We were treated to outstanding performances from some of our dancers, as well as Rebecca Ingham who gave a stunning vocal performance.  Our guest speaker this year was businessman Andy Pickles.  During his speech, he gave an interesting and charismatic insight into his life thus far.

Whilst his name might not be familiar to most of us, if we mention Jive Bunny then many parents would nod their heads in recognition, as the majority of our parents did on the evening. Andy started Jive Bunny in Rotherham in the 1980s as a very young man and his first three single releases made it to number one in the charts.  At that time, Jive Bunny was turned down by several major record companies and Andy had to release his first track on his own label.  The message he was at pains to share with our students was that if they have a dream, they should follow it with perseverance because with the right attitude, anything is possible.  He now runs his own Careers Education company.  We would like to thank Andy for his inspirational talk and a special thankyou to the Mayor of Maghull for helping to give out the prizes.
