Literacy and numercy catch up

Literacy and Numeracy Impact Statement

2019-20

The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium gives schools additional funding to support year 7 pupils who did not achieve the expected standard in reading or maths at the end of key stage 2.

In 2019-2020, Maghull High School received £6,570 through this funding.  We used the Year 7 Catch-Up Premium to provide catch up support in literacy and/or numeracy as appropriate for the individual pupils. All eligible pupils received small group teaching to enable them to benefit from extra individual attention. Many of the lessons also had at least one teaching assistant in the class. The funds were also directed to the following interventions:

Accelerated Reader scheme

literacy intervention

reading comprehension intervention

spelling intervention groups

numeracy intervention groups

Due to the impact of coronavirus our intensive intervention was somewhat disrupted.  We will continue to provide additional intervention throughout 2020-2021 for our year 8 cohort to address the gaps in literacy and/or numeracy skills of these students.

In the 2019/20 year 7 cohort, 71.4% (25/35) identified for numeracy support were on target for their end of year expectation.  Support is ongoing this academic year for the 10 pupils now in year 8 still requiring catch up intervention. This additional support is delivered through the maths curriculum, class grouping, inclusive support intervention and small group tuition.

In the 2019/20 year 7 cohort, 62.2% (28/45) identified for literacy support were on target for their end of year expectation. Support is ongoing in year 8 for the 17 pupils now in year 8 still requiring intensive catch up intervention.  This support will continue to be delivered through the literacy intervention ladder and inclusive support.  In addition, pupils will continue to access the Lexia programme, reading recovery programmes and small group/one to one tuition.

Year 7 Literacy and Numeracy Intervention Programme

2020-2021

In 2020-2021, schools will no longer receive a ring-fenced year 7 catch up grant from the DfE.  Instead, the National Funding Formula (NFF) will allocate funds to schools centrally.  We believe we have a duty to ensure that each individual child is entitled to the best possible chance of achieving their potential and as such we will continue to run our literacy and numeracy catch up programmes.

In the absence of scaled scores from cancelled 2020 KS2 SATS, Maghull High School has administered GL Cognitive Ability Tests (CATS) to provide a diagnostic baseline assessment of year 7 students.  This has provided us with indicative scaled scores for reading and maths.

Students on roll in year 7- 210

Number of pupils with a scaled score of 99 or less in reading – 15

Number of pupils with a scaled score of 99 or less in maths – 10

The universal Catch Up premium will be directed to provide catch up support in literacy and/or numeracy as appropriate for the individual year 7 pupils.  All eligible pupils will benefit from small group teaching to enable them to benefit from extra individual attention. Students will also be supported by an in class teaching assistant.   The funding will be directed to the following interventions:

reading comprehension intervention

spelling intervention groups
